Now Christian Aid Week has become the country’s biggest ‘house-to-house’ collection, with 300,000 volunteers going from door to door each year, delivering envelopes then picking them back up from householders a few days later. That iconic little red envelope gets everywhere, landing on over 10 million doormats, and raising around £9 million annually – with nearly £1 million in Gift Aid alone.
This year, from Sunday 9th to Saturday 15th May, the focus is on helping slum dwellers in Kenya: in the capital Nairobi, more than 2 million people live in crowded, informal settlements or slums, with little or no access to clean water or basic sanitation, and hence live with the constant threat of disease. Christian Aid partner MNU has been working in some of these settlements, helping the inhabitants build drainage systems, toilet and shower blocks, and employing local people to clean and maintain them. The benefits to health and quality of life are tremendous.
So please consider contributing to the Week’s fundraising effort, where even small amounts of money can bring massive changes to the lives of many people in need. And if you are a UK tax payer and can Gift Aid your donation, it will be worth even more, without any additional cost to you.
