PYRAMIDS ROCK AT HOLIDAY CLUB!

When term dates for the two Ickenham Primary Schools were announced, we knew we would have a problem: Glebe and Breakspear broke up for the summer in completely different weeks!  So much for that old Ickenham rule that says, “First full week of the holiday means Holiday Club!”  In setting the dates so that children from both schools had a chance to attend, we realised that more than the usual number of Breakspear families might be torn between Holiday Club and getting away on their annual break.

Sure enough, we only registered 70 children – just over half of the usual number.  Our motto became ‘small is not bad, it’s just different’ and we challenged those present to each make enough noise for two.  Believe me, they did it, and our morning stories and songs were as lively as ever.

Our theme was based on the stories of Joseph, from being thrown down a well and sold into slavery, right through to becoming Prime Minister of Egypt.  And the story tellers were a varied bunch.  Holiday Club regular Gladys the Cleaner came back to see us, along with her trusty baggage handler Dave.  Winnie the Pooh brought his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood.   Even the Egyptian Prime Minister dropped in at the URC!

As well as morning stories and songs, the children enjoyed group time, and threw themselves into all the usual activities of crafts, sports and outings.  They contributed jokes (some good, some bad!), wrote their thank you letters, and everywhere they went they were praised for their behaviour by the volunteers accompanying them, and by others they met on their travels.

And speaking of the volunteers; young and old, in the morning and afternoon, in the church and out on trips, before, during and after the week itself – a huge number of hard working and dedicated people make this event happen and I’d like to thank them here.  It’s a credit to each of them that Holiday Club continues to provide an exciting, fun and caring week for every Ickenham child who wants to attend – what a record to maintain for 45 years!

Term dates look like they will give us the same scheduling issue next year, but once we have confirmed the dates for Holiday Club 2014 we will publicise them here in ICN, and give the details to both schools.  Bear this in mind when planning your holiday if you can.  Summer is even more fun if it includes a holiday AND Holiday Club!

STOP PRESS:  We have just learned that Adrian Guthrie has accepted the post of Rector of Alcester Minster group of churches in Warwickshire, and he and Juliette will be leaving St Giles’ on 20th October.  This was announced at St Giles’, the Ickenham URC and in the churches of the Alcester Minster on Sunday 18th August, and the appointment is subject to the normal formalities.  More details next month.
