CONSERVATION WORK ON THE PYNCHSTER MOAT

Pynchester Moat is an ancient monument situated near the end of Copthall Road West. Clearance work has already taken place led by Alan Preece, the Nature Conservation Officer of London Borough of Hillingdon, with volunteers from the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) and local residents.

Work took place on Sunday April 3, and further conservation will continue on Thursday June 30th and Sunday November 6th. More volunteers from among our local residents would be appreciated. The work is to cut down and clear undergrowth. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing such as gloves, and footwear, but tools are provided. If can offer your time and assistance please call Brian on 07831 309 631.

ICKENHAM DISTRICT GUIDES

Guiding in Ickenham has been very busy in 2004, from Kids on the Catwalk to 90 years of Brownies being celebrated in September. Many of the girls went on camp, pack holiday, or Brownies Under Canvas. Various charities were supported by a sponsored bounce for Cystic Fibrosis by the Rainbows, a fun evening by Brownies for Cancer Research UK and a games evening by Guides for Genes for Jeans.

The Rangers helped at Ickenham Festival Dance in the cloakroom and as marshals on Festival Day for the Swing Band Concert.

Rainbows saw a change to its programme in September when Rainbow Roundabouts was introduced under the headings of love, learn, life, and laugh along, with a new song.

Several of the rangers were awarded their Chief Guide Challenge : Jenny Hurst, Louise Innes, and Nicola Cove and nine Guides from two companies were awarded their Baden Powell Challenge : Danielle Hall, Nicola Innes, Gillian Friend, Emily Power, Louise Kingham, Lucy Henderson, Hannah Hughes, Harriet Di Bartola, and Megan Irving.

In November we had a new District Commissioner appointed, Jane Mason, who is also looking after Harefield District.

We continue with our fund raising for the upkeep of Guide Headquarters in Community Close, our next event being a Spring Fayre on April 16th at 11am.

“WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT ICKENHAM” – Competition Winners

Last month we offered you a chance to win one of five author signed copies of the new book Images of England – Ickenham. Local sales have been excellent and Mace created a display area for it and included, too, Sheena Rosser’s book Ickenham – A Brief Guide. Hopefully Richard Piper’s new book Lost Elysiums? Will soon be featuring in the same display.

Congratulations to the five lucky competition winners. They are: Mrs A.J. Martin of The Greenway, Mrs Rosemary Hodgson of Rectory Way, Mr Alan Noad of Parkfield Road, Mr Tim Leman of Crosier Road, and Michael Edington, aged 8, of Hoylake Crescent. Highly Commended were those from Patricia Self of Farnborough Village, Kent (formerly of Wallasey Crescent) and Stanley Wheeler, aged 96, of Crosier Road. It was terribly difficult to make the final choices, so well done to all those who entered. The winners have received their prize already.

It is not possible to publish all the winning entries this month, so just two have been included. Others will be printed in future editions.
a)
Swakeleys House, grand as could be,
Ickenham Festival, full of glee.

Manor Farm and Ickenham Hall,
Warm-hearted churches, welcoming all.

Gifted to us by Charlotte Gell.

The Compass Theatre, the Village Hall,
A variety of dwellings, some big, some small.

Excellent schools, for learning and fun,
Clubs and pubs when the day’s work is done.

Four railways to choose from - better than two!
