WEA COURSES – A ‘FREE TASTER’.

As the summer comes to an end, it is time to push some of those outdoor physical activities to one side for another year and to start thinking about other brain stimulating indoor activities for the winter months.

The WEA (The Workers’ Educational Association) provides part time courses for adults, all of which are run by experienced and qualified tutors. No qualifications are needed for students to join and each student may attend their first class as a ‘free taster’, without any further obligation. Why not come along and give the course(s) of your choice a try?

For 2005/2006 the new chairman of the Ruislip and Uxbridge Branch, Caroline Field, believes that she and her committee have put together a particularly diverse, stimulating and absorbing course programme. All of the courses start in the week of the 26th September 2005 and take place at the Compass Theatre, Glebe Avenue.

Monday:
10:00. Music: Aspects of Romanticism. (20 meetings).
10:00. Finance: Stock Market Investment for Beginners. (10 meetings).
13:45. Wild Birds: Their Habits and Habitats. (20 meetings).
13:45. Religious Founders and Their Legacies. (20 meetings).

Tuesday:
10:00. Ancient Greece: Art History. (20 meetings).

Wednesday:
10:00. Novels of Today: Snapshots of Europe. (10 meetings).
14:30. Current Affairs: Our World 2005. (20 meetings).

Thursday:
10:00. Science: The World of Plants. (20 meetings).
13:45. Enjoying Poetry. (10 meetings).

For further details of these courses contact either Caroline Field (01923 – 824922) or Robert Hardman (01895 –632774).

Full details of all the local courses are contained in the WEA brochure, which may be obtained at any local public library or at selected local bookshops.

4TH ICKENHAM URC AND 1ST CHEAM GUIDES

To begin the summer holidays Ickenham and Cheam Guides met up at Tolmers to camp : 28 guides, 5 young leaders and 5 adults, including Sarah Landon from the Wirral.

Although the camp began with dry weather we had a mixture of rain and sun but the weather didn't stop the girls enjoying rock climbing, archery and swimming.

The theme of Arabian nights, influenced the entertainment at the campfire and enhanced the menu with Morrocan chicken and Tabbouleh.

Everyone was sad to leave after making new friendships but looked forward to meeting up next year.
We said goodbye to Louisa who is moving to Belgium in August.

AFTER THE BOMBS

ICN never thought that it might be an instrument of ensuring a local resident was safe and sound after the London bombings during July. However, this was an email received by your editor on 10th July. Only names and addresses have been omitted.

G’Day David

Yes, I’m in Australia (Brisbane)!
I thought that you’d be interested in the following story:

My sister, Pauline lives in Ruislip, and I was getting concerned that I couldn’t contact her last week, especially in light of the bombs on the tube.

I did a Google search on her road, and came up with the Ickenham Church News, which had an ad for Joanna Cowan’s Garden Design Service, and showed an address in the same area.

I rang Joanna, who kindly offered to go and ask Pauline’s immediate neighbours if they knew where she was and, when I rang back, Joanna told me that my sister was on holiday in Scotland and due home today (Sunday)
Needless to say, I was greatly relieved.
Small world innit?
Best Wishes,
Geoff Underwood

Small world indeed, and thanks to Joanna for being such a good neighbour.
