HEINZ WOLFF TO SPEAK AT WEA LECTURE SUPPER EVENING

As we enter November it is time to start thinking once again of the WEA Lecture Supper evening at Ickenham Village Hall. This year this popular local event will take place on Saturday 25th November starting at 6.30 p.m..

The evening starts with the WEA AGM, which is conducted as quickly as possible. Once the official business of the evening is completed the bar is opened and a cold buffet supper is served to allow the guests to enjoy the company of new and old friends. Once the guests have ‘wined and dined’ the evening reaches its climax with a lecture by a guest speaker.

This year the WEA committee was delighted when Professor Heinz Wolff of Brunel University accepted their invitation to be the guest speaker for the Lecture Supper evening. Professor Wolff was once Head of the European Manned Space Commission but for over 20 years now he has been involved in research at Brunel University into the use of technology for the improvement of the quality of life for the elderly (‘Tools for Living’). He will be talking about his work at the university and some of his inventions.

Professor Wolff has the reputation for being an entertaining and humorous speaker and is regarded as an expert in a specialised, fascinating and mind-blowing field of study. During his past lectures he has been known to carry out ‘experiments’ and on one memorable occasion he made aluminium!

It really does promise to be a very enjoyable and special local evening and everybody is welcome. Tickets are £8 each including supper and may be obtained from either Caroline Field (01923  824922) or Brian Rose (01895  230948). Don’t delay, book your ticket today!

FESTIVAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS PAST AND PRESENT GET TOGETHER AGAIN

On Sunday 1st October Festival of Ickenham Committee members past and present joined with each other in the rain outside Swakeleys House to be photographed with outgoing Chairman, and Festival founder, David Millen.

JOHN IS GIVEN A ‘MUSICAL SEND OFF’

On the evening of Sunday 8th October a choir of seventy, and twelve organists, assembled in St Giles’ Church along with the largest evensong congregation seen for many years. The Church was very full indeed. Choirs from the U.R.C., and Ascot Parish Church, joined with St Giles’ Choristers past and present. With them were twelve organists who had all played a part, at some time, in the musical life of the Church. Everyone was present, primarily, to praise God with the music and liturgy of a beautiful and ancient Anglican service and, secondly, to give John Miley a ‘send off’ into retirement that he will never forget.

The music was played and sung beautifully, and was appreciated greatly by all present.

After the service a reception was held in the Church Hall and speeches of thanks were offered for John’s long and successful service as Choirmaster. Presentations were made to him from the Church, the Choir, and others whom his life has touched.
