ICKENHAM WARD COUNCILLORS HARDEST WORKING IN THE BOROUGH
A survey by the Gazette Newspaper has rated our local Councillors as the hardest working in the London Borough of Hillingdon with Cllr. John Hensley being the most conscientious at attending meetings. Cllr. Ray Puddifoot and Cllr. David Simmonds came second and third in a survey of the number of civic meetings attended by all Hillindon Councillors.
ROBERT (BOB) MACKENZIE FORREST
1918 2006
Bob was born in 1918 and educated at the Harrow County School for Boys and University College London where he obtained his law degree in 1939.
During World War Two he served in the Intelligence Corp and was stationed, ultimately, at Field Marshal Montgomery’s Tactical Headquarters, 21st Army Group. His command of German was a great attribute.
He qualified as a solicitor in 1948.
Bob died in hospital on 28th December 2006, and a packed United Reformed Church attended his funeral service on 11th January 2007.
Bob was a man of many parts. After a brilliant career with B.O.A.C. and British Airways, as its Group Legal Adviser, then as Head of the Legal Department of I.A.T.A., he retired in 1980 having spent seven years working in Geneva. However, he continued his work, at UCL, as an honorary lecturer in International Air Law.
Bob was also a great craftsman. He constructed two superb model railway layouts and a magnificent doll’s house, which gave much pleasure to members of his family and friends and visitors alike.
Stamp collecting was another of his hobbies and his albums were kept meticulously.
In 1998 Bob published his first book “God Only Knows”, the original drafts for which were printed quite regularly in the Church News. The latest one was reproduced in the July/August 2006 edition where we had got as far as the letter K. A thinner sequel, with the same title, followed up this book in 2004. Both books affirmed that he was a confirmed and unashamed Christian, who had grown up in the Faith and wrestled with its difficult areas before resolving them to his own satisfaction. Both books are well worth studying.
Fourteen years ago, after emergency heart surgery in Australia, doctors gave Bob up to seven years to live. He certainly proved them wrong!
Bob took a keen interest in local and world affairs and was still writing, and sitting up in his hospital bed, until a few days before he died.
In spite of his great ability and achievements, Bob remained a quiet modest man, a much-loved husband, and father to his children and their partners. He was a loved grandfather to seven grandchildren and a great grandfather to two with a third due very soon.
Many folk in both our local churches can testify to Bob’s friendliness, his wonderful sense of humour in conversation, his love of God, and his joyful anticipation of meeting Him “On the other side.”
Au Revoir Bob, and our sincere condolences to your family and friends. Ickenham has lost another great example of how a life should be lived.
With thanks to Margaret Clarke
CONGRATULATIONS PERRY
Congratulations to ‘Perry’ Parsons (or should we call him Geoffrey Lloyd?) a teacher at Vyners School, Ickenham, who was made a MBE in the New Year Honours list for services to education.
Perry was reported to be ‘shocked and delighted’ at the news he heard last November, but this was tempered by the discovery that his father, who passed away shortly before knowing about the award of the honour, was one of several people to nominate him. Perry has dedicated the award to his father and the Vyners Swing Band and has dubbed the MBE as ‘My Band’s Excellence’.

Perry with the Vyners Swing Band taken 2nd January 2007 at Sweetcroft House Residential Home
In some exclusive comments to ICN Perry told the editor the following:
“I have been quite overwhelmed by the tremendous support that people have shown once they heard about the award. So many people have genuinely wanted to share my joy and it has been terrific sharing it with them. There have been texts, emails, phone calls, chats in the street and online. Cards and letters have been non-stop.
On the Saturday the Award was published, I had so many texts and calls that I had to recharge my mobile twice during the day.
I had tea/coffee/sherry galore in Ickenham when I called on various past parents - ones I knew would be pleased to hear the news!
I have always thought of myself as much more a part of Ickenham, than Langley.
On New Years Day Mum passed over all the documentation relating to the latest nomination. I found it so difficult to read any one letter of endorsement, as they were all so moving.
With respect the letter the VSB wrote in support of my nomination, I had to stop three or four times
before I could finish it.”
