ST GILES’ CHURCH MONTHLY STREET PRAYER LIST

Each Sunday at St Giles’ Church we pray for all the people who live or work in a particular road in the Parish.  During April we will pray for the following roads:

Apr 6th             Hetherington Way
Apr 13th           High Road
Apr 20th           Hoylake Crescent
Apr 27th           Ickenham Green

If you live in one of these roads why not join us at our 8am or 9.45am services?  You will be most welcome.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE BEREAVED

There will be a special Memorial Service at St Giles’ Church on Sunday 4th May at 3pm for those who are bereaved.  The names of the departed, whose funerals were conducted at Ickenham URC or by St Giles’ Church staff between the beginning of March 2007 and the end of February 2008, will be read out during the service.

Revd Bernie Collins, the URC Minister, will give a talk and members of the Churches’ Pastoral Support Group will be present.  After the service, the congregation will be invited to have refreshments in St Giles’ Church Hall.

Anyone who would find this service helpful is welcome to attend.

FRED LANGHAM

We deeply regret to report that Fred Langham died on 10th March aged 101.  He leaves his wife Mary and daughter Jean.  A profile of Fred will appear in a later ICN.

MEN’S BREAKFAST

Gary Grant, Managing Director of The Entertainer Group, is coming to address our breakfast meeting on Saturday 26th April at 8.30am in St Giles’ Church Hall.  Do come, bring a friend and if not a regular, let Don Gwilt know on 01895 673704.  Tickets are £2 at the door (half as usual to the speaker’s nominated charity).

Adrian Guthrie at the entrance to the hall

Derek would have laughed to see so many people, including lots of his family, turn up to witness his favourite hall (in St Giles’ Church Hall) being named after him.  Fittingly, the ceremony was held on a lovely, Spring-like day on 24th February.  Conducting the ceremony with a big smile, Adrian said, “The PCC wanted to mark the contribution that Derek made to St Giles’, not just to the church hall, but as a deputy warden, a PCC and Deanery Synod member, a Holy Mower and a regular worshipper.  Derek saw the hall through the second phase of building to the development of its current high volume of use.  Amongst the satisfactions, the problems of the foundations and the unsociable parking around the hall made this a difficult and personally costly phase.  But I am sure Derek would point out that as chairman of the hall he was aided by a devoted and industrious team, particularly David, Joyce, Yvonne, Rosemary, Richard, Bob, Bob and Roger.  So today must also be a day when we thank the whole team.”

Freda Kneale was thanked for loaning Derek to the hall and for the many contributions he and Freda had made to St Giles’ during Derek’s lifetime.  Adrian led a short prayer, re-affirming our intention to use the hall and the other rooms for God’s glory, and for the development of individuals and community.  He gave thanks for Derek’s sense of humour, his cheerful disposition, his energy and commitment and his friendship.

Chris Kneale, on behalf of the family, said how proud they were that the Hall had been named after Derek.  “He would have been surprised, delighted and deeply touched.”

RUN AROUND LONDON

It’s that time again when the streets seem full of runners in training for the big one – the London Marathon – which takes place this year on Sun 13th April.  One Ickenham resident who will be taking part is Hazel Screen, the daughter of former ICN editor David Crane.  Hazel is often joined on those long training runs by her four-legged companion Casper.

She is hoping to raise sponsorship on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and has an online website through which people can offer encouragement and pledge support.  (See www.justgiving.com/hazelscreen)  If you don’t have internet access but would like to contribute, contact Hazel on 01895 633700, or see the official sponsor forms in the vestibules of both churches.

OR CIRCLE THE CITY

If 26 miles at a run is too much to contemplate, then perhaps 6 miles at a more sedate pace is more to your liking.  ‘Circle the City’ is an annual informal sponsored walk organised to mark the end of Christian Aid Week.  Follow the full route around the churches in the City of London for a 6 mile walk (10km) or if you prefer take the shorter route of just 3.5 miles.  Whichever you choose, be sure to stop off to enjoy the clowns, the face painting, the music and much more.

Last year, Ickenham walkers, young and old, enjoyed near perfect conditions and they raised around £700 for Christian Aid in the process.

Come and join us this time on Sun 18th May.  Registration is at 1pm at St Mary le Bow, Cheapside EC2 or at All Hallows by the Tower, EC3.  For more details, pick up a leaflet in St Giles’ or at the URC.
