The CLICK Rukiga team, in conjunction with the Ickenham Art Society, HESA Art Society and Arbutus Group of Artists, are staging an art exhibition at the URC from Wed 14th May to Fri 16th May.  The exhibition will feature a wide range of paintings, sculptures and photographs, including some African themed pieces.

Please come along to view what should be an interesting collection.  Then on Sat 17th May, there is an opportunity to buy at auction any pieces you particularly liked, as all items have been donated to raise funds for the CLICK Rukiga water project.

Entrance to the exhibition is free (although donations would be gratefully received).  The opening times are as follows:

VSB PROVES (PROJECT) TRUSTWORTHY

“Just Before I Close My Eyes” was one of some 30 numbers presented with gusto and professionalism by members of the Vyners Swing Band at Vyners School to 150 mainly Ickenham residents.  The occasion, on 29th March, was their Spring Concert, their 20th Anniversary and 40 years since the band’s founder, Perry Parsons MBE, started his teaching career at the school.

The crowd’s favourites included “Strike Up the Band”, a first performance of “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “Mack the Knife” with Perry on the trumpet and vocal.

Perry was even more vocal when announcing that this was the band’s 542nd performance and, in the process, they had raised over £130,000 for various charities.  This event, however, had a special significance because it was dedicated to the Project Trust and to Ashleigh Bairstow in particular.

Ashleigh, presently Vyners’ Head Girl, had performed several saxophone solos during the concert and Perry said that during her time at the school she had been unquestionably one of the most loyal supporters and participants of the band.

The proceeds were to aid her expenses for her forthcoming year-long Project Trust venture to teach underprivileged Ugandan children.  Before the Concert, she had managed to raise £2,500, still £2,000 short of her target.  To their great credit, the audience donated nearly £1,500, to which Barclays Bank added £750, meaning that the target had been bettered.

Appropriately, for this publication, the concert finished with the rousing “Gospel John”.
