A NEW PAGE IN THE LIFE OF THE LIBRARY
After its extensive refurbishment, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Ray Puddifoot, has formally opened Ickenham Library by unveiling a plaque. He said how proud he was to open this now outstanding facility, and reminded us that Lady Bird Johnson had once said, “Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest”.
About 150 people attended the opening, including the Mayor (Cllr Shirley Harper-O’Neill), the Council’s Chief Executive and key members of his staff, Councillors, schoolchildren and local residents. Library staff members are greatly impressed with their new workplace. “I think the people involved have done a great job”, said manager Sam Everett. “It’s all so clean looking and light inside and the additional space and equipment are bound to encourage more visitors.” And so they did – 550 used the library services on the first day!
The original building has been cleverly extended by adding a mezzanine floor, accessed by stairs and a lift. The new floor houses four of the seven computer terminals and four Apple Macs. Downstairs, at the rear, a new conservatory faces onto the small garden – a good place for a variety of birds. On this occasion, the conservatory was used for a performance of a scene from the ‘Wizard of Oz’ by pupils from Vyners School. This was enjoyed by a group of children and teachers from Breakspear School, who were then treated to a conducted tour of the premises.
The extensive counter in the centre of the building is manned by the smiling library staff who also assist customers at the Starbucks coffee and tea bar.
Ickenham Library is one of several borough libraries to be refurbished but it is doubtful that any will be more pleasant or welcoming.
