April 2010 will be a special month in our churches’ calendar, starting when we reflect on the initial sadness and eventual joy of Eastertide.  Then we will begin a year of celebration of the Covenant which was signed between St Giles’ and Ickenham United Reformed Church a quarter of a century ago, in April 1985.

Of course, Ickenham’s two churches had been working together in many ways before the Covenant itself – for example, by joining together to manage Christian Aid Week locally, to produce Ickenham Church News, and to run that great annual Ickenham event that is Holiday Club!  Recognising the many benefits that working together brought to both congregations and to the wider community, in 1985 the churches came together in Covenant, a positive decision and promise to “seek never to do in separation those things which could be done better together.”

And over the 25 years that followed, many things have indeed been “better together”.  There have been regular joint services and events (especially at Easter – see below for this year’s offering), and the sharing of resources and skills, notably in our joint contribution to the biennial Ickenham Festival.  We’ll be enjoying that again this June.  And when either church has been without a minister or rector, clergy at the other church have helped to “keep the show on the road”.

At the original celebration in 1985, both congregations met at the URC for the signing of two copies of the Covenant (one remains on display in each church).  Signatories including the then St Giles’ Rector, Revd Paul Kelly (pictured left) and URC Minister Revd Alan Cassingham (far left) as well as representatives of the St Giles’ PCC and URC Elders.  Then everyone walked in procession (below left), in glorious sunshine, to St Giles’, where the service of Thanksgiving continued.

This year, the Silver Jubilee celebrations will begin with a joint service in the same style, starting at the URC at 10.30am on Sunday 25th April, and again moving on to St Giles’.  We are delighted that we will be joined at the service by many friends old and new, including Alan and Robin Cassingham, as well as Paul Kelly’s widow Gill, and ex-St Giles’ Priest-in-charge, Philip Robinson.

Watch out here in ICN for details of further events in celebration.  All will be flagged with the Covenant’s Jubilee logo (shown for the first time here), which has been designed for us by Herald Painter Timothy Noad (of whom more on page 3).  Then come and join us at some or all of the events – be part of the next 25 years!
