ONE FOR THE LADIES
Have you recently retired, moved into the area, or are you just looking to make new friends and enjoy a stimulating morning?
Ickenham Village Morning Townswomen’s Guild meets every third Thursday of the month, from 9.45am until 12.15pm in the Village Hall. We have a speaker most months, and details of our meetings appear among the ‘Events’ on page 6 of ICN, as well as on the notice board outside the Village Hall. There are several subsections too, for specific interest groups: walking, social studies, music, handicrafts and swimming. There is a “Ladies on their own” group, and a Luncheon group after the meetings; we have a Birthday Party, a Carol Service at St Giles’ in December, and we arrange several outings during the year.
Visitors and new members are always welcome. Why not come along to this month’s meeting, a Social and Beetle Drive on Thursday 17th June? Or visit us at our stall in Swakeleys Ground on Festival Gala Day on Saturday 19th June.
For further information at any time, phone Carol on 01895 638488.
DONATIONS
Receipt is acknowledged, with grateful thanks, for donations towards the cost of ICN, from:
Peter and Mary Barnard of Ascot; Mrs Ellis of Ruislip
Copy for the July issue should be with the team by 12 noon on 13th June. Please remember there is no separate August issue of ICN, and also note that July’s ICN will be a little later than usual around the village; this will allow us to cover the Ickenham Festival, which has itself moved later in June than in recent years.
STOP FOR A QUIET MOMENT?
As you will see from the banners across the tops of these pages, the churches are as involved as ever during Festival Week. The usual favourites appear again, but often with a new twist: come along and experience the live music at the Churches’ Tent on Gala Day, see the new displays at the Hobbies, Arts & Crafts Exhibition, and enjoy the innovative arrangements at the Flower Festival.
But in the midst of the excitement of all that the Festival has to offer, you might also appreciate the chance to stop for a while and experience a quieter moment or two. If so, why not come along to the Quiet Afternoon at St Giles’ on Friday 18th June? Visit between 2pm and 6pm. Stay for as long or as short a time as you want. Take the opportunity to follow the Prayer Walk through the Churchyard. You’ll emerge refreshed and ready for the excitement of Gala Day!
PS Behind the Churches’ Tent on Gala Day, you will find a smaller Prayer Tent. Feel free to drop in for a quieter moment there too.
WHAT A BARGAIN DAY - AND MORE TO COME!
The weather for the URC annual Bargain Day on 8th May wasn’t too promising: we accepted on the Friday that it would have to be indoors for the books. Fortunately we are blessed with a number of ‘hardy perennial’ helpers, so the Plants remained on the Forecourt.
The coffee morning did a roaring trade, as did books in the porch and in the parlour. And for the Auction, we had more lots than ever. We even ran out of catalogues! But that didn’t deter the bidding for a wide range of household and collectable items, and a busy but fun time was had by all. In total, around £1,900 was raised for the church and its four charities for the year – a great result, only possible because of the generous donations for all parts of the day from the people of Ickenham.
Dare we ask you to do it all again? Well, you always come up trumps when we do. So our next event, to set the Ickenham Festival off in style, is a Forecourt Sale – weather permitting, all on the Forecourt! – on Saturday 12th June. There will be homemade cakes, plants, and bric-a-brac, as well as DVDs, CDs, videos and records, boxed games, toys and puzzles and fun for the children. But the star attraction will be the books: thanks to a generous donation already received there will be even more Quality Books, including a good selection about London, and examples of Oxford World Classics. The event starts at 10am, goes on till 12 noon, and entrance is free.
If you have items to donate, please bring them to the Church between 3pm and 7pm on Friday 11th June. If you need them to be collected, or want more information, call Richard Piper on 01895 634348.
