JAWS AMONGST THE FLOWERS
Who’d expect to see a shark at the Autumn Horticultural Show in the Village Hall? Well, Ben Cason (aged 7) did. He had made his vegetable marrow look so much like a shark that he won a Certificate of Merit in the Juniors’ Section. Ben’s entry was part of a display from the Glebe School’s gardening club and it is a treat in this day and age to welcome the participation of a record number of children to the horticultural show in particular and to gardening in general.
Despite the funny old weather we’ve experienced lately, there was a striking display of colour created by all participants, to greet the many visitors to this annual show. The flowers and vegetables were up to their usual high standard and the show benches were crammed full of members’ exhibits of flowers, pot plants, vegetables, fruit, cookery and wine.
Apart from Ben, proud winners of Merit Certificates were Roger Trigg, Alan Noad, Ming Chui, Heidi Patterson and Margaret Mayes, who also gained the most points in the horticultural classes. The Aspro cup for the Dahlia classes was won by Ralph Hughes.
The ‘tea team’ excelled itself and the raffle was drawn by Lady Joyce Singleton Booth, a member of the Society. Ickenham & Swakeleys Horticultural Society wish to thank everyone who came, took part and helped, and to say that members are always welcome at their shows, lecture group meetings and trading hut. FESTIVAL SUCCESS
The recent Ickenham Festival AGM featured a film show of photographs of this year’s festival, brilliantly set to music by Rose Bennet. All agreed that the Festival, under David Edington’s leadership, had been an outstanding success. The Finances, in a healthy position, were presented by David Thorpe, who announced he was standing down after many years as Treasurer. He has been replaced by Gayle Metcalfe, while all other Committee Members remain in post.
The next Festival fund raising event is the very popular Race Night on Saturday 2nd October in the Village Hall, with first race at 7.30pm. Supper is included but bring your own drinks. For tickets, contact Doug on 01895 633217, Nikki on 01895 623119 or David on 01895 672783.
