PLAYLES ON THE MOVE

By the time you are reading this, long time Ickenham URC members Eileen and Tim Playle will have moved to Derbyshire, to live near their elder daughter.  “The family had been getting anxious about our encroaching old age!” said Tim.  (It’s good to note that ‘old age’ is only ‘encroaching’ at 93!)  “So with some reluctance we have decided to make the move.”

Both Eileen and Tim have lived in or near Ickenham and Uxbridge since childhood.  When Eileen moved to Ickenham in 1927, she attended the old Congregational Church in the High Road, then in the Village Hall, until our current building in Swakeleys Road was completed in 1936.  (The Congregational Church became the United Reformed Church in 1972.)  When she finally stood down from the choir just two years ago, Eileen had given an incredible 77 years’ service to leading our worship in song.  And as URC archivist, Eileen maintained a big tin chest of papers and photos concerning the church’s history – with personal memories of most of them!

She met Tim at age 11 when they were both pupils at Bishopshalt School, and these childhood sweethearts were married in 1946.  Tim’s commitment to our church has also been extensive.  He has been treasurer, and was instrumental in setting up the 2nd Ickenham Scouts.  He was also one of the original signatories to our Covenant with St Giles’, to which he and Eileen have remained committed.

Eileen said, “We shall miss all our Ickenham friends so much, and would like to thank you all for your friendship and support over so many years.  Our lives have been enriched by the spiritual guidance we have received from both churches.  Thanks also for the many kind messages sent during recent weeks, and for the generous parting gift we received from the URC.”

Our thanks, love and best wishes go with them as they move to pastures new.

CHELSEA RECOGNITION FOR JEAN

Jean Wilson, one of the ladies who ‘does’ the flowers in St Giles’ has had her talents recognised at the Chelsea Flower Show.  Together with her friend, Jo Coldham, she was awarded a Bronze Medal for their stunning arrangement of flowers interpreting the class title “Garden Style”.  This was a classic arrangement of green and white foliage and flowers, including roses, calla lilies and alliums, and incorporating pools of water.

Jean has been arranging flowers in St Giles’ for more than 30 years and credits Gill Roker, Gwen Weldon and the now sadly departed Mrs Soames for helping develop her undoubted skills.  The flowers were obtained from Lloyd who runs the flower stall in the Uxbridge Pavilions precinct.

NIGEL JOHN TUCKER

Jessie and Avril Tucker, wife and sister of their beloved Nigel, would like to thank everyone who attended Nigel’s funeral on 27th May, inside and outside St Giles’.  They would also like to thank all who sent messages of sympathy and prayers, making them both very proud of the high esteem in which Nigel was held.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2011

On behalf of all the people who have been helped, we want to say ‘A BIG THANK YOU!’ to all who:

However you contributed, it was very much appreciated.  Throughout Ickenham, over £8600
was given, to help people in poverty, out of poverty.  Thank you once again.
