September sees the return of a full programme of activities
at St Giles'.و As well as normal Sunday
services, our groups for young people start again after the summer break.
Our Youth Leaders and Helpers will re-dedicate themselves to their work at our
0945 Service on 28 September. We are extremely grateful to have such a
dedicated team of people willing to give up their time and use their gifts in
nurturing children and young people in the Christian faith. A part of our
Act of Re-dedication says how privileged we are to work with the precious gift
of the mind of a child.
In these days of immense pressure on people's time we are even more grateful
that our leaders and helpers give up time not only on Sunday or whenever their
group meets (here we must not forget our uniformed organisations) but also time
for preparation, training and keeping themselves up to date with teaching
techniques. Children and Young People are an integral part of the Church
of today and we want to help them grow in faith into adult disciples of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
October will present us with a chance to escape some of the pressures of life
and participate in a Quiet Day to be led by my colleague Ken. If you
would like to join us on Saturday October 18th, please see our weekly News
Sheet for details. We do indeed owe it to ourselves, and as part of our
commitment to discipleship, to follow the example of our Lord and 'withdraw to
a quiet place' now and again to wait on God, listen and allow him to speak to
us. Take a day out and join us.

It seems that the media will be preoccupied for some time by Lord Hutton's inquiry into the death of the government scientist, Dr David Kelly. Among the issues raised are "spin" - the particular emphasis given to a statement so as to favour a particular interpretation: and "sexing up" (awful expression!) - adding material so as to strengthen an otherwise weak argument. (I hope my understanding of these slippery terms is reasonably correct!) The truthfulness of both the government and the BBC are under scrutiny, with possibly profound implications for both.
Christians will be concerned, with many others, about this case. Many were unpersuaded about the validity of going to war against Iraq, whereas others were prepared to trust the government. We need good, trustworthy government, and reliable news media to help maintain our democratic freedoms. And we are particularly concerned if an apparently good and honest man like Dr Kelly is driven to suicide by pressures placed upon him by government and/or media.
No doubt we all (including me) sometimes indulge in "spin", and in "sexing up" things we say, and if that casts doubt on our reliability, or misleads people, perhaps with damaging consequences, we need to ask ourselves whether we are being caught up in an unhealthy modern trend. The Bible teaches the need for honest speech - the ninth commandment says "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour", and Jesus said, "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No', 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one." Those who preach and teach the Christian message need particularly to follow the example of Paul: "We have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God."
May God help us all to acknowledge our failings, and in future to adopt such principles in what we say.

GARDEN PARTY RAISES £300 FOR CHARITY
Ickenham Churches Women‰s Group held a very
successful garden party on Wednesday 30th July. £300 (and rising)
was raised for ‹UNIQUEٹ. ‹UNIQUEٹ is a charity, which helps children with
chromosome difficulties. Every child, with such a problem, presents different
symptoms hence the name unique.
A big ëthank you‰ to Audrey Upton for
allowing the use of her garden.
