ARCHIE MARKBY
 A service of thanksgiving was held recently to celebrate the life of Archie Markby who was Rector of St Giles’ between 1964 and 1968. Many of us long standing residents will remember him, and his charming wife Qona, for his willingness to engage with all kinds of people. He was also a very good speaker with a lively sense of humour, who occasionally delivered the Epilogue on ITV (in the days when TV did close down for the night.).
Archie was born in 1915, married Qona in 1940 and they had two sons, Alan and Patrick. He died in September last year, nine years after Qona. At the service, his granddaughter Vera said of Archie: “He was smart, steady and a very good example. He represented old-fashioned values and virtues – in a good way. He worked hard and steadily all his life and had his health, his home and his family to show for it. But he lived modestly and carefully so he could be generous towards those he loved. These were powerful messages for a girl growing up in a very ego-centric generation that seeks to get rich quick!”
Archie was also the very first editor of ICN, when it began publication in January 1965.
FAREWELL TO KEN
After 17 years of ministry at St Giles’, The Revd Ken Tombs is retiring on 15th July. He has touched many people’s lives here in Ickenham, and has been greatly appreciated. Ken will be preaching at both the 8am and 9.45am services that day. Afterwards, at 11.15am in the church hall, there will be an opportunity to thank him and wish him God’s blessing for the next stage of his life and ministry. Mark it in your diary now – and please join us to say farewell to Ken.
