FROM THE URC MINISTER
As we drove into Ickenham on his last day in Britain, he told me of the particular blessings that he would seek to develop in appropriate ways back home: The importance given to worship in meetings of the church In Conference and Assembly the business discussions were set in the context of relevant worship, prayer and Bible study, rather than formal prayers and songs at start and finish. The use of church premises for different activities Wesis noticed the variety of mid-week church activities, and the range of groups that hire rooms. He saw this as strengthening the life of the community, as well as helping to meet the costs of maintaining church buildings. Holiday Clubs In PNG there are youth camps for older teens and twenties to explore Christian faith, but in Ickenham and other places in Britain, Wesis was impressed by Holiday Clubs for younger children. He saw the fun we have presenting Bible stories, singing, playing and praying together. Messy Church At the Window on the World holiday conference, an Anglican priest led Messy Church each morning for adults and children to explore various crafts on a theme, then bring them together in worship – something like Service45 at Ickenham URC, and Live@Five at St. Giles’ a few years ago. Wesis wants to use this style sometimes, but not the title “Messy” which he felt detracted from what was enjoyed and achieved. Different churches working closely together In PNG the Churches are largely separate, but in Ickenham he saw and heard about St. Giles’ and the URC working together throughout the Festival, during Holiday Club, producing ICN and welcoming newcomers to Ickenham Park. In Uxbridge he saw Christ Church has a single congregation both United Reformed and Methodist. In High Wycombe he preached at the (Black Pentecostal) Church of God Worldwide Mission International, held in Trinity URC, and in Walthamstow at the URC Asian Congregation.
