GETTING CRAFTY FOR CHARITY

The Hillingdon Arts and Crafts Group, which meets twice monthly to learn about, and make, all types of crafts, only started in 2012 but has grown so much that it will be showcasing work, much of it done for charity, in an exhibition during Festival week at the URC Hall on Saturday 7th June from 2pm-5pm.  In particular, some of the exhibited quilts will be destined for the charity ‘Project Linus’, which provides comfort and security to sick and traumatised babies, children and teenagers by giving them new home-made patchwork quilts.

The group is also using their crafting skills - and is encouraging other groups and individuals - to support The Harlington Hospice up-cycling scheme.  Anyone can join in!  Under this scheme, items bought at the Hospice shop in Ickenham are craftily changed for another purpose and donated back to the shop for resale.  Items up-cycled and re-donated in this way will be displayed for sale in the shop window during Ickenham Festival Week this year.  For more details on the group, the exhibition or how to up-cycle for Harlington Hospice, please contact Sue Williams on 07799054444 or williams_k21@sky.com.

“A HOST OF GOLDEN DAFFODILS!”

The Ickenham & Swakeleys Horticultural Spring Show in the Village Hall brought to mind William Wordsworth’s famous line, proving to its many supporters that spring has finally sprung.  Daffodils aside, including some worthwhile exhibits from Glebe, there was much to see.

“We raised a huge haul of amazing raffle prizes in aid of the Mayor's Charity Appeal”, said committee member Rachel Evans.  “The raffle went on to raise £450!”  The Mayor Allan Kauffman, accompanied by the Mayoress, came early to the show and to view the entries and later presented the prizes. 

Once again the show was notable for the children’s contributions and the mouth-watering entries in the cake-making categories.  And the cakes that accompanied the tea were voted the best yet!

Perhaps one of the most interesting and attractive entries was in the Handicraft division; Nick Keane’s turned, ornamental vase (pictured) made from beech wood was a worthy First Prize and Certificate of Merit winner.  Nick has been working at his lathe for ten years and is a member of the Middlesex Wood Turners Association.  He normally makes wooden bowls but decided to have a go at this intricate vase as a new challenge.  He is also a keen photographer and additionally captured another First Prize for his atmospheric picture of Swakeleys House.

There is sometimes the temptation to take village shows such as this one, and the tremendous amount of effort put into them by their hardworking committees, for granted.  The saving grace with this Ickenham show is that most of the committee members do manage to find time to enter their own creations – and are often rewarded with much success by the wholly independent judges.   How privileged we are to enjoy the fruits of all their labours!

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE BEREAVED This special service will be at 3pm Sunday 18th May in St. Giles’.  Names of those, whose funerals were conducted between March 1st 2013 and February 28th 2014 at either of the Ickenham Churches, will be read out.  Bereavement support and refreshments will be available afterwards.  You are welcome to join us if you think it will be helpful.
