It's Rubbish
Your editor has received letters from concerned
citizens complaining, bitterly, of the increasing problem of
litter in our village. It would appear, from recent newspaper
and television reports that this is a London wide problem.
There are local folk who try to clean up,
daily, our Village central area and open spaces. However,
the problem is getting out of hand and now
in most residential streets, some gardens, and green areas, can
be found a trail of food containers, broken bottles, drinks containers
and sweet wrappers. Both sides of Swakeleys Road, plus much of
the dual carriageway, are often little more than a tip! The area
behind the wooden fence of the Buntings is a disgrace, and clearance
has not yet happened because apparently this is a 'care taking'
job not a street cleaning one.
It would appear that the time has come for
action. We all need to take greater responsibility for disposing
of litter by picking it up and placing it in one of the numerous
village centre bins, rather than merely getting annoyed by the
mess. If we each do this and our food, drink and confectionary
outlets do a lot more to remind their customers about 'litter
blight', we might be able to control a situation, which currently
brings shame upon us. When we all play our part, then we can
rightly request more assistance from Hillingdon's street cleaning
teams whose daily litter picks (outside the shops, and once
per week on the central reservation and other side of Swakeleys
Road) are excellent but still do not solve the problem.
Bins by all bus stops, could be very helpful, especially
on the U.R.C. and Rectory side of Swakeleys Road.
It has become embarrassing to invite visitors
to walk round our Village Centre, its environs and various well-known
haunts, nooks and crannies. Letís all do something about
it not ignore it! Hopefully Hillingdon's new anti-litter and
street drinking campaigns, announced in the February/March edition
of 'Hillingdon People', will help - but only if we all play our
part. With Ruislip, Hayes and Uxbridge as the trial zones, can
Ickenham be next in the queue please?

Letters
Dear Editor
Recently, whilst delivering I.C.N. in
Edinburgh Drive, I met four boys from their secondary school
at the end of that road. They were equipped with bin bags, plastic
gloves, and 'helping hands', picking up the dreaded litter and
supervised by their form master who was following at a discreet
distance. They had given up their dinner hour to do this task.
I congratulated them accordingly, and
remarked that my son had always taken his tuck litter home in
his pockets, whereupon the two boys on my side of the street,
without a word, put a hand in their pocket and promptly dropped
their own litter into their bin bag.

Fairtrade Fortnight
Taste for Life
1st
- 14th March www.fairtrade.org.uk
This
Fairtrade Fortnight we mark 10 years of the FAIRTRADE Mark.
The theme, 'A Taste for Life' is a celebration
of quality, both quality of life for the producers that is enhanced
by the Fairtrade premium, and the top quality of the products.
The FAIRTRADE Mark will be celebrating 10
years on U.K. shop shelves in 2004. With your help and support
over the past 10 years, the retail value of foods sold with the
FAIRTRADE Mark increased to £63 million in 2002. Not only
has the Mark endured, but also it has excelled, sending a clear
message to shoppers and the companies that respond to them that
Fairtrade is well and truly in the mainstream and here to stay.

From a School essay:
In olden times when marauders landed on
the coast, the villagers would run to the top of the hill and
set fire to a deacon.
