IMAGES OF ENGLAND - ICKENHAM

New Local History Book by James Skinner

This fascinating collection of old photographs of Ickenham is full of information about the village from its earliest time right through to its development into the busy suburb it is today.

Using photographs and informative historical detail, this book provides a powerful insight into the village's changed nature during the twentieth century. From images of Ickenham's buildings, such as Swakeleys and the Fox and Geese Public House, to the well-known pond at the centre of the village, the vibrant social life of the area is conveyed here.

James Skinner has written a number of books on local and cinema history, including Around Uxbridge, Hillingdon Cinemas and West Drayton and Yiewsley.

Ickenham’ can be obtained from all good, local, bookshops price £12.99 ISBN 0 7524 3411 X. We hope, too, that some Ickenham shops will stock it. Euros and Mace certainly had copies on their respective counters during February, and they were selling well.

One can order, also, copies direct on 01453 883300. The book was published on 1st February. It is in paperback with 128 pages and more than 200 illustrations and will appeal to those interested in our village history.

Many members of our community helped James to produce this book and will be delighted by the result even though not everything provided could be used in a limited number of pages. Many of you are acknowledged in the foreword and your photographs are there for all to see and enjoy, and we commend it to you. James said, “Please thank everyone who provided material, or help, of any kind. I am so grateful to each and every one of them. I hope, soon, to be returning all the loaned material.

COMPETITION: Your editor has five, author signed, copies of the book, which can be won. All you have to do is write, or email, in no more than 150 words a snappy article titled “What’s Special About Ickenham”. Make sure it reaches the Editor by 12th March, so that if you win, your entry can be reproduced in the April and May editions of ICN. Entries received after 12th March will be discounted. The editor’s decision will be final. Make sure that you enclose your name, address, and telephone number with your entry. Only current and past residents of the Village may enter, so if you have moved away you will have to provide your old Ickenham address as well and an indication of the years you spent in our community.

NEXT MONTH THERE WILL BE DETAILS OF YET ANOTHER NEW LOCAL HISTORY BOOK. Called Lost Elysium, by the U.R.Cs Richard Piper, this book traces the development of six villages in north west Middlesex, including Ickenham, through contemporary eyes at different periods from the 1870s to WWII, followed by the author's own observations of those villages as they are today. Log on to www.lostelysium.com for more details.

ICKENHAM CHURCHES’ CHRISTIAN AID GROUP

During 2004 the Group was able to send £1,400 to Christian Aid (over and above the Christian Aid Week collection). This sum was collected by means of the monthly Ploughman’s Lunches at the URC (£556), the waste paper deposited in the bins at the St.Martin’s Approach car park in Ruislip (£501), the Good Friday frugal lunch (£143) and a balance of £200 from 2003.

All are welcome at the Ploughman’s Lunches, which provide a satisfying meal of soup and ploughman’s for £2. Dessert 25p extra. Forthcoming lunches are 11th March and 6th May.

The income from the council bins in St Martin’s Approach shows that the loyalty of those faithful souls, who still take their waste newspapers and magazines to that venue in Ruislip, is well rewarded and appreciated.
