‘J’ JACOB’S WELL AND ‘K’ KNOWLEDGE

Bob Forrest continues to provide you with his personal thoughts for your spiritual well being using the alphabet as his guide.

JACOB'S WELL

Jesus had to go through Samaria and reached Sychar, a town near the piece of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well is there. The disciples went on into the town to buy provisions, but Jesus stayed behind at the well. It was about midday.

A Samaritan woman came to the well to draw water and Jesus asked her for a drink. The Jews have nothing to do with the Samaritans, so she said "How come a Jew like you is asking a favour from a Samaritan - and a woman at that?" Jesus replied, "If you knew what God can give and realised who it was that was asking you for a drink, you would be asking him for a drink and he would give you real water."

The woman said, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where are you going to get your real water from? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us the well and drank its water himself - and his family and cattle too?"

Jesus replied, "Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again, but everyone who drinks the water I'll give him will never be thirsty, but it will well up inside him and last for ever." She said, "Sir, give me this real water so that I don't get thirsty again, and don't have to come to this well to fetch water. "

Jesus said, "Go and call your husband and come back here." She replied, "I have no husband." Jesus said,

"You are telling the truth when you say you have no husband, for you've had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. You told the truth." She said to him, "Sir, I can see you are a prophet, so please explain this to me. It is something that has been bothering me for a long time. Our ancestors worshipped here on this mountain, but you Jews say people ought to worship in Jerusalem." Jesus said to her, "My dear, believe me. The time is coming when you will not need to worship God on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem either. The time is coming and is already here now when you will not need a special place to worship. True worshippers will give God spiritual worship. God is looking for people like that to worship him. God is Spirit and true worship must come from the spirit."

Then the woman said to him, " I know that Christ the Messiah is coming.     When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Jesus said to her, "He is talking to you now.”

At this point the disciples came back and were amazed to find him talking to a woman, but no one said "What do you want", or "Why are you talking to her."

Then the woman left her water pot so that they could draw water themselves, and went back to the town and said to the townsfolk, "Come and see a man who knew everything about me. He must be Christ." So they left the town and came to him at the well. They were so impressed that they asked him to stay with them and he lived there for two days.

Many of the Samaritans believed he was the Christ because of what the woman had said, but many more believed because of what he said himself.

KNOWLEDGE

My thoughts are not your thoughts, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah

Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent

1 Corinthians

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding

Proverbs

GOD ONLY KNOWS
