DISTRIBUTORS UNITED
Around half of the 120 volunteers involved in the regular distribution of ICN attended a meeting in October arranged by Joyce Arnold. Joyce, along with Karen McArtney-Roberts, organises the newsletter distribution process each month.
ICN Editor, Heather Piper, introduced the publishing team and explained how the magazine is put together. She emphasised how vital is the role of the distributors and thanked them for their support. Heather also underlined the fact that ICN is completely self-supporting financially. All of the team give their time for free, and the cost of professional printing is covered fully by local advertisers and the very welcome donations we receive from both societies and individuals.
Five thousand copies of each ICN edition are delivered free of charge to all Ickenham households, the two churches, the library, Compass Theatre, shops, pubs and businesses. Additional copies are posted further afield, to ex-residents keen to keep in touch with life in Ickenham. The articles are uploaded to our website (www.ickenhamchurchnews.co.uk) and audio cassette versions are recorded for blind and partially sighted people in the area.
If you have any queries about the ICN distribution process, you can contact Joyce on 01895 672987.
HARVEST – A TIME FOR GIVING...
In both churches, bedecked with colourful autumn flowers, Harvest Festival was a time for giving. Despite the recession, the congregations were even more generous and the donations of fruit, vegetables, tinned food, drinks and money were plentiful.
They will be much appreciated, too, by the recipients. For St Giles’, Anne O’Brien again organised the distribution process, helped by Yvonne Edington and others. They divided the goods into attractively decorated boxes which were shared between Charles Curran House, Ickenham Abbeyfield, Ickenham Cottages, Woodlands and the Willesdon charity Upper Room. From the URC, fresh produce went to Charles Curran House, while the packaged goods went to Hillingdon Council for distribution throughout the borough.
...AND FOR SHARING
Harvest weekend at the URC was also a busy time for sharing good food and company too. On the Friday evening around 50 people from both churches and further afield enjoyed a Barn Dance. Young and old alike showed off their dancing skills in the
Church Hall.
Then, on the Sunday, around 45 folk stayed on after the morning service to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Nathalie Murray and her helpers had organised a fantastic spread, and as we rested between courses, a few people regaled us with some readings with a Harvest theme. Junior Church members were also on hand with their best jokes to keep us amused.
URC NOVEMBER EVENTS
Two important dates this month: for each please donate what you can for us to sell. But do also turn up on both days to buy some of the other stuff. It’s the ultimate in re-cycling!
On Saturday 7th November our Jumble Sale runs from 10am – 12 noon and admission is free. Our jumble sales have built up a high reputation throughout the borough so we will be looking for plenty of clothes, shoes, books, toys, games and bric-a-brac as stock. Please bring them along to the church on Friday 6th November between 5pm and 8pm.
Any high quality items though, could be held over until Saturday 21st November, when our ever popular Christmas Fayre takes place. See full details on page 5. This event raised around £2,600 last year, and we are keen to beat that this time. The gift stall is always a big draw, but even more so this year as local Uxbridge based company Hasbro has provided us with lots of brand new items to sell. There are Transformers products, and a very high-tech looking version of Monopoly, with Electronic Banking instead of notes! (How are you supposed to sneak £500 from your brother’s pile with that, then?)
There will be food and drink, children’s activities, a tombola and our usual grand raffle, with a top prize of £100 cash, plus further wonderful prizes from local traders. The Fayre runs from 10am until 2pm, with the raffle drawn at 1.30pm. Entrance is still only 50p, with under 12s free. Any items you can donate will be gratefully received throughout the afternoon on Friday 20th November.
For further details, or to have items collected for either event, contact Richard Piper on 01895 634348.
DONATIONS
Receipt is acknowledged, with grateful thanks, for donations towards the cost of ICN, from:
Anon via David Thorpe; Cancer Research UK Ickenham; Mrs Byrne of Burnham Avenue via Marian Smith; Patricia Self of Kent; Linda West of Cheshire, in memory of her parents Harry and Gwen Berry; Anglo-German Club; Workers’ Educational Association.
Copy for the December edition of ICN should be with the team by 12 noon on 13th November. Please remember there is no January issue of ICN, so if you want to publicise any events taking place early in the New Year, tell us about them too.
