HOBBIES, ARTS AND CRAFTS AT THE FESTIVAL

Do you have an interesting hobby?  Do you collect or make interesting or unusual items?  Come and share your enthusiasm with the rest of Ickenham - take part in the Hobbies, Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the URC, from Wednesday 16th to Friday 18th June, during the Ickenham Festival.

If you would like to be involved, contact Exhibition Coordinator Peter Clark for further details, on 01895 672762, or email him at peterclark618@waitrose.com .

MARATHON MEN

No, they were not among the thousands running 26 miles around London in April, but they did take part in the Organ Marathon at the URC on 27th March.

With fellow organists Bob Rae and James Mooney-Dutton, the three pictured (left to right – John Miller, Glyn Warden and Peter Williams) kept the music coming for 10 hours, and in the process raised around £1,000 towards the cost of the instrument’s recent refurbishment.

And earlier in March there was another enjoyable evening of music, when organist Richard Hobson and musicians from Merchant Taylors’ School produced ‘Music for Organ and Voices’, adding a further £300 to the fundraising effort.  Thanks to all for their time and talents!

FLOWERS OF THE FUTURE

It was a delight to see the Ickenham & Swakeleys Horticultural Society Spring Show so well supported, especially by youngsters, including those from the Glebe School Gardening Club.  Katie Hawkesworth, aged eight, (pictured) was the proud winner of the Certificate of Merit for the Best Exhibit in the Junior Classes with her bowl of flowers realistically made from fabric.

The show in the Village Hall was, as ever, a feast of colour, dominated by a wide variety of daffodils.  Revd Ken Tombs, who was on hand to present the many prizes, said it was an honour and pleasure to be invited.  He commented on the photography section - he is an acknowledged photographer - but admitted he had never been successful photographing flowers.  He said, “They either move in the wind or the sun goes in or something else happens to spoil the perfect picture.  I’m still looking for a good book about how to photograph them.”  Well, here are our best efforts, although more can be seen in colour on the Society’s website at www.ickenham-horticultural.org.uk .

New Chairman Graham Tarling has been a Society member since the age of 17, and is following in the footsteps of his much-respected father, Les.  He tells us that the Society is anxious to find a volunteer for the role of Registrar.  The position is not particularly onerous but it does require the ability to use a computer.  If you are interested, contact Hon Secretary Pat Faille for more details on 01895 678403.
