GOOD FRIDAY WITNESSED
Why do we choose to call the day that Jesus was crucified ‘Good Friday’ of all things? It may have derived from ‘God’s Friday’; and with hindsight, it was good because with His death that day, the barrier of sin was broken.
As is usual in Ickenham at Easter, members of both churches came together, to keep the vigil of Good Friday. A joint service at the URC, led by Bernie and reflecting on Jesus’ suffering, included some thought-provoking passages written by Leigh Smith for the occasion. So we heard ‘The Children’s Story’ movingly read by Sophie and James Murray, followed by further readings and prayers. Then, everyone was given a small strip of cloth and invited to hang it on one of two large crosses as symbols of the sins for which Christ has enabled us to be forgiven.
After the service came the Walk of Witness. Mostly in silence, we walked behind the cross from the URC to West Ruislip station and back to St Giles’. Stops for prayer and reflection, again led by Bernie, were made at various locations en route. These included the Village Hall where residents, shopkeepers and businesses were prayed for. At the Pump the Library, Scouts and Guides were remembered. Thanks were also given for Ickenham’s water supply, symbolised by the Pump itself. After the Walk ended at St Giles’, a frugal lunch was taken there, followed by meditation on the last hour of Jesus’ life.

The speaker will be Revd Dr. June Hughman, Uxbridge Town Centre Minister, and members of the Bereavement Support Group will be present. After the service, the congregation will be invited to have refreshments in St Giles’ Church Hall.

A POPULAR AWARD
David and Jenny Edington were taken by surprise at the Ickenham Festival Barn Dance when they were presented with the coveted Swakeleys House Shield. This was because, in keeping with the tradition of surprising the recipients, the Festival Committee had led David, its Chairman, to believe that they had nominated someone else.
Making the award on behalf of the committee, Alan Noad remarked that the Shield had been awarded so many times since its inception in 1986 that it had been necessary to have it made larger. He reminded the audience that the Shield was originally given to the Festival Committee to be awarded for “Commitment to the spirit of the Ickenham Festival”. David and Jenny had been nominated on several counts, including their outstanding support of Breakspear School and the fact that together, for seven years, they have run a Beaver Scout group, whilst Jenny is also one of the Friends of Guiding. Also, it was acknowledged that the conservation of the village and its trees owes much to David’s detailed knowledge and efforts; but perhaps most appreciated of all is their joint commitment to the Ickenham Festival.
Receiving the Shield, Jenny said, “Both of us have lived here for a long time and always say to people who move to Ickenham, ‘Either join in or miss out’. I like Ickenham and I’m staying”. David thanked everyone for their support and said what a great honour it was to be selected to join a long list of people and organisations who had contributed so much to the well-being of Ickenham, resulting in it being such a special place to live in.
NO PLANES – SO MIKE GETS ON HIS BIKE FOR RUKIGA
The Icelandic volcano put paid to the plans Mike Whitlam, Ken Tombs and Wendy Williams had for their ten day trip to Rukiga. They had hoped to visit a number of the children being sponsored by Ickenham residents through the World Vision programme, as well as several schools, and to see the outcome of the final stages of the water project, which has been completed since Mike’s last trip just over a year ago.
“We will get the trip rearranged as soon as we can”, said Mike, “but it is disappointing: so many people had made arrangements, and we were taking gifts from the Ickenham sponsors for the children we were due to meet.”
Still, the unscheduled free time allowed Mike to get in an extra training run on his bike. “We’ve got two CLICK Rukiga fundraising events coming up during the Ickenham Festival”, he told ICN. “The first is a concert at the Compass Theatre on Sat 12th June at 7.30pm, with music by the Hillingdon Music Service Brass Band, their Jazz Orchestra and supporting groups.
“Then on Sun 20th June there is a not-too-tough sponsored Cycle Ride, starting at 2.30pm from Bikewise Cycle Shop. We’d love to have lots of people taking part, and even more folk signing up to sponsor them!”
For concert tickets (at £10, or £8 concessions) contact the Hillingdon Music Service, Pro Music Shop in Ickenham, or Mike himself (01895 678169). To register for the Cycle Ride, and pick up your sponsorship form, go along to Bikewise, or contact Mike, or Bryan Wadland (01895 613904).
VISIONS OF ICKENHAM COMPETITION

Photographs should be taken between 1st May and 30th June 2010 and each entrant may submit a maximum of two images. Two prizes will be awarded. The best adult entry will win a Hamper of Choice Goods. The best Under 18s entry will win a £25 cash prize.
Each entry must be accompanied by a completed and signed application form.
