TUNNEL CAMPAIGNERS
A group of Ickenham petitioners presented Nick Hurd MP (suited centre) with 26 petitions against the HS2 Hybrid Bill at his constituency office recently. The petitions included 1,291 signatures from the streets likely to be most badly affected by ten years of construction blight, traffic congestion, pollution and subsequent noise from the high speed train operations.
The great majority of these problems could be overcome by extending the ‘Northolt’ tunnel beyond Ickenham so this proposal is included in all the Ickenham petitions as well as those from Nick Hurd, Hillingdon Council and Harefield. So far, HS2 Ltd has refused to consider this option but the Commons Select Committee is tasked to analyse the petitions and make appropriate recommendations to the government. Mr Hurd said, “The fact that nearly 1,300 Ickenham residents have signed the Petitions is testament to the strength of feeling across Ickenham about the need to change existing HS2 plans. I will continue to lobby both Government and HS2 Ltd in support of the changes, with the need to extend the tunnel top of the list.”
The £50 billion project, due to be started in 2017 and completed in 2026, will enable passengers to travel at speeds up to approximately 200 mph from Euston to the outskirts of Birmingham.

POLICE MATTERS
New Police Borough Commander for Hillingdon: Following the retirement of Steve Kershaw, Det. Chief Supt. Nick Downing (left, at the Ickenham Festival URC opening service picture top right) has been appointed to this important post. He was closely involved with the London Olympics and led Operation Podium, cracking down on touting and counterfeiting. Nick says, “No challenge is too big – I always deliver!”
Courier Fraud Warning: This sophisticated fraud involves scammers telephoning the victim purporting to be someone from their bank, the police or other law enforcement agency. Victims are duped into revealing their PIN and later handing over their credit or debit cards. Police and banks will never ask for your PIN or bank card. Never give these data to anyone. Although incidents of scam crimes in Ickenham are low, the local Police warn that they are becoming more frequent. MEDICAL INFO IN A WALLET
Ruislip and Northwood Lions Clubs have launched a potentially lifesaving Medical Info in Your Wallet scheme. It encourages people with pre-existing medical conditions to carry a credit card sized fold-out document, giving personal medical information; blood group, illnesses, allergies, medication and contact details of your doctor, next of kin etc., and even details of any pet that may need looking after if you are hospitalised! The little document, which comes in a plastic folder, can save emergency services valuable time if you are taken ill away from home. Pick up one free at local libraries, AgeUK Hillingdon, Doctors’ surgeries, Citizen Advice Bureaux, Ruislip Lions on 0844 9632 447 or Northwood Lions on 0845 8337 853.
