A FROLICKSOME FUN DAY!
Nearly 200 people from Ickenham’s St Giles’ and URC, as well as Harefield’s St Mary’s Church, came together to enjoy the annual Fun Day at the Willow Tree Centre in Breakspear Road North. Once again the event was brilliantly organised by its committee, assisted by around 40 other volunteers. This year, fearful of adverse weather, enough tents were raised to shelter an army! Fortunately they were only required for a short part of the day.
Sporting highlights included archery, wellie throwing, Frisbee golf, rounders and football. Then there was orienteering (fiendishly difficult), a puppet show and the opportunity for gourmets to feast on the delicious barbecue. Even music lovers were catered for as the St Giles’ Fun Afternoon Big Band, specially assembled for this occasion, got plenty of feet tapping. The day was rounded off nicely by the communally-sung hymn ‘Give me joy in my heart’, sweetly led by Holly Blackman.
This was one of Caroline Hill’s final appearances amongst her many church friends before her return to Wales, so Adrian took the opportunity to wish her and her family well. He also made a small presentation to remind her of the love and appreciation that the family have earned during their time in Ickenham.
All-in-all another success and we look forward to more fun next year!

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD PARTY FOR MOUNT VERNON
A charity Garden Party in the local Scouts Hut on August 17th raised an amazing £1000 for the Lynda Jackson Cancer Centre at Mount Vernon Hospital.
Ickenham Afternoon Townswomen’s Guild staged the event, and blessed with fine weather, they attracted around 60 people to their various stalls of home produce, books, DVDs and New / Nearly New items. With a tombola and raffle, as well as a delicious scone and cake tea, the takings with donations reached this very impressive total.
And it was a happy, friendly occasion enjoyed by all. Our thanks go to all who worked so hard to make it a success.

OCTOBER URC JUMBLE SALE – AND MORE!
Thanks to your generosity in donating and buying, our Late Summer Forecourt Sale raised almost £600. Let’s keep going, both for church funds and for our nominated charities!
Our Autumn Jumble Sale is on Sat 8th October, 10am – 12 noon, and admission is free. Why not have a clear-out, and bring what you don’t need to the church the day before, between 3pm and 7pm? You can phone Richard Piper on 01895 634348 if you need items to be picked up.
Another date for your diary is Sat 19th November for our famous Christmas Fayre: more details next month, but note that raffle tickets will shortly be on sale with a top prize of £100 cash, kindly donated by Austin Residential.
YOUNG STARS GRACE THE FLOWER SHOW
Breakspear and Glebe Junior Schools featured prominently at the Ickenham and Swakeleys Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show in the Village Hall. Apart from their individual exhibits, they had mounted impressive displays about their School Gardening Clubs.
Long-standing supporter of the Society, Ralph Hughes, commented on how this younger element had something to teach us oldies about enthusiasm when the weather is less than perfect. As we all know, it’s been an odd year for weather and this was reflected in the number of entries being somewhat down on last year. However, Ralph was rejoicing in his own Certificate of Merit for the best plant in show, namely a Begonia Ricinifolia, which he started as a cutting two years ago.
The prizes this year were presented by George Mist who, among other things horticultural, was a Warden at Ruislip Woods. He presented a Certificate of Merit to a proud Lynne Davey for her lattice mincemeat tart which she made, “just how my mum used to do it”. Lynne received other First Prizes too, as well as the Horace A White Cup for Domestic Classes. Finally, the winner of the best exhibit in the Junior Classes for her arrangement of flowers, foliage and berries was Sophie Cason (in the picture of our younger gardeners shown). So this year the children get the last word!
