THE GREAT DAFFODIL APPEAL

Marie Curie nurses provide the most wonderful end-of-life care for people who wish to spend those final days in their own homes. They also provide vital support for families when it is most needed.
The teams are totally dependent upon voluntary contributions, and throughout March there will be opportunities to take part in the Great Daffodil Appeal. Watch out for collectors in Ickenham on 16th March, and if you are able, please do give generously. Thank you!
AUDREY UPTON (1936 – 2013)
 The URC was filled on February 8th, when the family and friends of Audrey Upton gathered to celebrate her life.
The church played a major part throughout Audrey’s life: she was christened as a baby in the Church of England, baptised into the Baptist church at age 16, and she joined the URC upon moving to Ickenham in 1967. And how we benefited! For Audrey was soon involved in all our activities, and over the years assisted or led in many - Junior Church, Holiday Club, the Churches’ Women’s Group, Badminton, and all those fund-raising events and coffee mornings where she provided the most wonderful cakes. For many years she organised the annual collections for Barnados and Christian Aid.
Her children Margaret, Cathy and John recalled happy days growing up in Court Road. Audrey loved gardening (and was a recycling and composting enthusiast long before it became fashionable.) The garden produce she generated went into home-cooked meals served at regular dinner parties and family gatherings. They remembered the cakes too, but even more so, Audrey’s selflessness, generosity, and love.
Involvement in various Ickenham societies – the U3A, the Flower Club, NADFAS and the Horticultural Society – led to many prizes for her flowers, vegetables and cakes, yet there was still time for travel. Audrey often visited family and friends across Europe and North America, as well as travelling with friends on cultural holidays to Russia, China, Norway and Eastern Europe.
Ill health meant that Audrey had to leave Court Road in 2008, to move to a nursing home in Chalfont St Peter. She retained a wide circle of friends, some even from her first days in infant school. Audrey’s funeral service included her favourite hymns, readings and prayers, beautiful flowers, and fittingly, it was blessed with the most glorious sunshine. |
