Val Price and family would like to thank the many friends who sent kind thoughts after Derek lost his battle to skin cancer. Special thanks go to Brian, who took the funeral service and gave both kindness and strength to get them through this sad time.
ICKERMEN ENTERTAIN US
Have you heard of the ‘Ickermen’? It’s the name for a new social group, formed in September 2012 by the men of the Ickenham Churches, to further the spirit of comradeship that already existed and to enjoy each other’s company at a selection of events. The ladies have had various groups to attend for a number of years – the Ickenham Churches’ Women’s Group, the Women’s Fellowship, the WI and Essence at St Giles’ for example; but apart from the now well-established quarterly Men’s Breakfasts, there have been few opportunities for the chaps to get together.
Well, in the last six months they have been making up for lost time! So far, events have included a curry evening, a stroll in the Chilterns, a visit to a brewery, a meal at a local restaurant and a decorating session in the Rectory. Then, on Saturday 9th February, they decided to entertain the rest of the church community by arranging a fish-and-chip supper in St Giles’ Church Hall. It was an early evening event, to accommodate all ages, and with eighty cheerful churchgoers attending, it was a great success!
The men behind the event don’t do things by halves: first on the agenda was the Hillingdon Youth Big Band who regaled us with numbers such as ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Greased Lightning’. Then came supper - not just fish and chips, but a selection of dishes including Quiche Lorraine, with pudding to follow, all served by the menfolk.
Next were the competitions. With quizzes on the tables and on the walls, our brains got a workout, then divided up into teams, we competed in a whole series of indoor sports, set up in the next room. There was target golf, archery, darts, Scalextric racing, bagatelle and more. After an exhausting hour we returned to the Derek Kneale Hall to hear the quiz results and learn that the sporting champions were the team members led by Juliette Guthrie (Well done!). And so ended a memorable evening, a triumph for the Ickermen.
