SYLVIA HOWES
Our thoughts are with the family of Sylvia Howes, formerly of Tavistock Road, who passed away peacefully on 4th January 2014.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Sylvia was a regular member of St Giles’, volunteering her time in Church and delivering ICN. Together with her late husband, Glynn, Sylvia also volunteered abroad. In Thailand, Glynn built a lorry from scratch enabling remote farmers to sell surplus produce in the village market whilst Sylvia helped out in the mission. In Romania, they worked in an orphanage; Glynn setting up an artificial limbs unit and Sylvia working with the children. In Poland, they spent a mid-winter month living in a van in a car park in the hospital grounds; Glynn fitted out a mobile unit as a charity shop with Sylvia’s support. Back in the UK, they often had overseas charity workers and volunteers stay over en route, or to collect the visas Glynn and Sylvia had arranged for them. They shared a happy 50 years of married life together.
The onset of Alzheimer’s sadly forced Sylvia to leave Ickenham and move closer to her daughter. Her illness eventually robbed her of much, but she maintained her selflessness, sense of humour, and love of children, music and dancing almost right up to the end. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE BEREAVED
There will be a special Memorial service at St Giles’ Church on Sunday 18th May at 3pm for those who have been bereaved. Lay Minister, Brian Reid, will give a short talk, and members of the Bereavement Support Group will be present. Names of the departed, whose funerals were conducted at Ickenham URC or by St Giles’ Church staff between March 1st 2013 and February 28th 2014, will be read out during the service. Refreshments will be available afterwards in St Giles’ Church Hall. Anyone who would find this service helpful is welcome to attend.

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
The Women’s World Day of Prayer Service for Ickenham and Ruislip will be held at 2pm on Friday 7th March at Ickenham URC. This year, the women of Egypt have prepared the service entitled “Streams in the Desert.” Everyone is welcome to attend, not just women. The service will last about an hour, with refreshments in the church hall afterwards. Please contact Dorothy Vickery on 01895 674223 for more information.

ATTENTION ICKENHAM DOG LOVERS!
Finding somewhere suitable to leave your dog when you go away can be tricky. So it’s good news that Linda Liasi, Ickenham resident for 35 years, is setting up a Home Boarding and Residential Day Care Club for dogs. Already a successful local businesswoman, Linda is now the Ickenham and Ruislip operator for the 101 Friends for Every Dog organization, which places dogs in caring family environments whilst their owners are away.
Linda is currently recruiting dog lovers with previous experience of looking after a dog, who would be at home during most of the day and would be willing to look after a dog in their own homes during the owner’s absence. The role would not suit those with very young children. The Carer would meet the dog and owner beforehand and would receive a small daily fee.
