EVERYONE DESERVED A MEDAL!

Over 130 excited children, and at least as many helpers, enjoyed this year’s Holiday Club, with its Olympic theme of ‘Going for Gold’.  It was five days of stories and song led by Ali and Liz, with Moira ably leading the choir and orchestra.  There were sports, crafts and outings too.

The morning stories looked at the qualities needed by athletes – and by Christians – in order to succeed.  From the Wise and Foolish Builders we learned we have to be prepared to put in the work.  The Parable of the Sower taught us to stay on our chosen path, despite temptations and distractions.  Noah’s ark building illustrated the importance of following instructions and trusting in our trainer.  And the story of the Widow’s Mite showed us that, no matter how small or insignificant we might feel, we each of us have something important and wonderful to offer.

Afternoons were spent creating a splendid array of crafts, participating in energetic sports (in very hot weather!) and on trips.  Outings to ice-skating, bowling, Quasar, and two to HOAC for climbing / abseiling and caving / low ropes were all much enjoyed.  As usual, we received a number of compliments on the childrens’ behaviour when we were out and about.

To avoid clashing with the Olympic Opening Ceremony that evening, the Friday Finale took place at 11.30am.  This meant decorating tables, creating displays, and generally tidying up – all while the children kept working in their groups!  Parents and carers who could join us were treated to the morning worship session, including our final story of the Lost Sheep: big or small, God loves every one of us, and rejoices when we turn to Him.

So, just as we saw in the Olympics, it takes teamwork and effort to succeed.  The children worked and played hard, having fun and making new friends.  Adult helpers, old and new, worked before, during and after the week itself to bring it all together.  The energy and enthusiasm of our many Young Helpers was especially great to see.  They will be the Group Leaders of the future, helping to ensure (along with us old-timers for a while yet!) that Holiday Club continues in Ickenham for many years to come.
