MORE CYCLING SUCCESS

Q.  Take the cycling endurance of Bradley Wiggins (almost!), add Sir Chris Hoy’s Scottish accent, and what have you got?
A.  St Giles’ Stephen Rutherdale (see July/August ICN), fresh from his success in cycling from London to Paris in two days, and raising £2,000 for CLICK Rukiga  in the process.

Stephen is pictured here, tired but victorious, and celebrating with staff outside the Ugandan High Commission in Paris, where his journey ended.  If you wish, you can still contribute to Stephen’s appeal via www.justgiving.com/srutherdale

ICKENHAM’S TORCH BEARERS

The Olympic Torch Relay was a great success, with 8,000 bearers getting the country primed for the excitement of the Games themselves.  Thousands of Hillingdon residents lined the streets on 24th July as the flame made its journey through the borough.  Two of the torch bearers – both Ickenham residents – are pictured here in their outfits and carrying their torches, marvellous souvenirs of a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Julia Hague (right) featured in May’s ICN, having been nominated as a torch bearer by readers of her inspirational book “You is for Unique”.  She is pictured with 14 year old Greta Bruce, a Vyners pupil, recognised for her efforts towards raising £10,000 in the fight against breast cancer.

SUE WOODCOCK

The Revd Sue Woodcock died on 25th July after a long battle with cancer.  Sue was Rector of the Church of Christ in Sabadell, near Barcelona, but retained strong links with St Giles’ and the Ickenham community, having arrived with her family here in 1953 at the age of four.  She attended Sunday School and was confirmed at St Giles’, and went to school at Ickenham High and Vyners.  After University, a varied working life saw her setting up a girls’ boarding school in Iran, spending time in Uganda, and doing pastoral work in Bolivia.  Back in Oxford she was ordained to the ministry, then took up her post in Sabadell.

Regular newsletters from Sue kept the St Giles’ congregation up to date with her work, and when she was last in Ickenham, in 2009, she attended and preached at the church, which she said always felt “like coming back to my roots”.  When asked, she described her ultimate ambition as being, “that when the time comes, the Lord should say ‘Good and faithful servant.’”

Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Michael Markham is pictured here with Leader of the Council Ray Puddifoot at the formal opening of the Jubilee Garden in Swakeleys Park.
